The executive coaching relationship is perceived by many writers and researchers as the foundation for successful coaching. However most of these authors and researchers are coaching practitioners or academics. There is very little research on the clients’ perspective of the executive coaching relationship.
In executive coaching there are all sorts of people out there who are Executive Coaches and as you would expect some are very good and others are not. When I decided to set up my own executive coaching company offering executive coaching and career coaching I knew very early on that it was important to have a good executive coaching qualification in order to help differentiate myself. As an Executive Coaching Company you might expect us to promote executive coaching as a key development tool. However the latest CIPD Learning and Talent Development Survey finds that executive coaching is regarded by organisations as one of the most effective development tools. For leaders and senior managers, the 585 respondent organisations, felt that external executive coaches provided the most effective development. Whereas for middle management the respondents felt that internal coaching was the best way to build capability.
You might expect an Executive Coaching Company to say that executive coaching is best for skills development. But it is true to say there may not be one easy answer to this question. It also depends on what is meant by the word ‘best’. Is that in relation to giving knowledge, cost or enhanced performance? The answer to the question may well also vary based on the type of skill that is being given e.g. leadership versus changing a tyre. In this article the focus is on those skills that require a behavioural change. So these include such things as leadership, negotiation, presentation and delegation.
